Courses and Workshops

I have a good deal of experience in organising and delivering courses and workshops for teachers of English, for example after being invited to do so for county authorities and individual schools in:

  • Oslo

  • Trøndelag

  • Hordaland (now “Vestland”)

  • Nordland

  • Hedmark

I have also given combined lectures/courses on assessment and feedback for the Norwegian Directorate for Education and Training (Utdanningsdirektoratet).

In most cases, there will be a degree of overlapping between the two concepts, but courses will have a stronger element of lecturing prior to participants working together in pairs and small groups. Workshops will as a rule have a much stronger focus on active participation from the start.

Examples of workshops

  • Short oral and written activities

Participants work in pairs and groups testing out activities and then adapting them to specific age groups. The activities can be used to warm up at the start of a lesson, to make a break between longer activities, or to finish off a teaching session.

  • Expanding vocabulary

Based on the idea that a lack of vocabulary can be a bigger hindrance for communication than grammar mistakes, we look at different ways in which learners can expand their vocabulary in a meaningful way.

  • From text to task

We look at different ways in which short texts can be an effective starting-point for various language-learning activities. Older pupils can be involved in adapting texts for each other.
